Background
In August 2017, through to January 2018, the STEM Projects for the South East South Australia were released for tender, ranging from Upper South East Region (Keith, Bordertown and Kingston), to Mid-South East Region (Naracoorte) and Lower South East (Mount Gambier). Kennett was fortunate enough to be awarded the majority of the projects within the region, both in hard-fought tender process and D&C novated contracts. With that, works were started on each project in a staggered program over a three month process.
Project/s
All five projects were a combination of refurbishment works and upgrading of current facilities to accommodate for the STEM Program. The projects included (but were not limited to) upgrades to several areas of each school depending on their needs and current infrastructure, and included the following:
– Library upgrades
– Senior and junior science areas & general learning spaces
– Upgraded outdoor spaces to link to indoor learning areas
– General technology areas & master space areas
– Technology Hubs

– Concrete works & structural steel works
– Internal & external linings
– State-of-the-art communications & electrical
– Up-to-date AV systems
– Flooring works
– Landscaping
– Plumbing for specialists learning labs & roofing
– Modern Joinery to suit open plan layouts/spaces

Challenges
– Asbestos removal within school premises
– Structural Demolition of existing Mount Gambier stone walls
– Existing old structures
– Vague at best services detailing from designers
– Remote works, lack of trades to use
– Lack of trades in remote locations.
Outcomes
– Quality workmanship throughout the builds
– General client satisfaction was good.
