Background

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) is the peak body for the sport of cricket in South Australia. SACA are responsible for coordinating international and domestic cricket matches, coaching and development programs, umpiring and ground management as well as administering high performance professional teams including the Redbacks, Scorpions and Adelaide Strikers. Currently leasing Park 25 within the Adelaide City Council, SACA sought to improve the existing clubhouse and grounds as part of a masterplan for the improvement of the immediate and surrounding parklands.

Project Detail

– A new 2 storey clubhouse building consisting of basement storage area for grounds-keeping machinery, player changerooms with medical and shower facilities, coaches and scorekeepers viewing boxes and top floor function area complete with high spec finishes, bar area and commercial kitchen and panoramic viewing deck. The high spec finishes required particular attention to detail due to the profile of the project including the selection of suitable subcontractors.

– Bulk earthworks to the existing cricket pitch involving cut, conditioning and placement of existing fill as well as imported ready for turfing by others. – Permeable paved carpark area, landscaping works and custom profiled concrete bleacher construction to the cricket pitch for spectating.

Construction Detail

– Site won and reconditioned soil to cricket pitch

– Precast basement structure

– 1st and 2nd floor structured on bondek slabs supported on off-form concrete beams

– Steel cantilevered roof structure

– Building envelope cladding combination of brickwork, VM zinc and glazing

– Timber decking with underdeck drainage system

– Custom profiled concrete bleacher seating area for spectating

– Services and infrastructure works including SAPN power connection.

Challenges

– Achieving the deadline for oval bulk earthworks handover despite the short timeframe and weather delays. The existing oval turf was stripped, soil was excavated and conditioned and placed to be handed over to SACA for turfing works.

– Working with SACA and Cox Architecture to achieve savings to satisfy SACA’s value management targets as well as maintaining the original design intent and function of the project.

Outcomes

– A quality finished product, this has met with the architect’s high level design intent and within budget, now operational and named Karen Rolton Oval.
