Resthaven Mitcham was purpose built in 1962 at 17 Hill Street, Kingswood, and has undergone several upgrades and renovations since. This latest $12.5 million major redevelopment over two stages included the building of 45 new bedrooms, replacement of the existing entertainment, kitchen and laundry facilities, the relocation of the building entry and enabled the elimination of all shared rooms.

Project Detail/s

The project was programmed with initial enabling works and 2 main stages of construction work. The initial early works onsite involved a new temporary site entrance and the installation of a new 120,000 litre inground stormwater detention system. Stage 1 followed and involved the construction of a new 35 bedroom 2-storey wing, a central activity hall, staff offices and the replacement of the existing kitchen and laundry. Stage 2 included the demolition of 2 existing wings with shared rooms, the extension of and refurbishment of another wing, provided new resident facilities and allowed for the creation of a new site entry, reception area and car park.

Construction Detail/s

The 2-storey redevelopment for Stage 1 was constructed with a structural steel frame, masonry and rendered CFC cladding with a timber truss roof externally and suspended concrete slab to Level 1. The Stage 2 element of works involved a new single-storey build as well as significant modification and connection into the existing 2-storey building.


– Detailed programming required during the Stage 1 build, a new kitchen and laundry were constructed, the existing facilities demolished, enabling the new hall and offices to infill between the 2-storey wing and the newly operating kitchen and laundry.

– Connection between the existing light-weight steel trusses and the new build elements.

– Existing unidentified structural elements in the existing facility required rework and redesign during the project.

– Upgrade and replacement of existing services and associated adjustments through the existing building required careful planning to minimise disruption to residents.
