Background

Prince Alfred Collage (PAC) have a continued program of campus expansion which has led to the need for a new larger canteen and student meals area. The ground floor level of the old two-storey library wing had been set aside for the new dining area. Previously this area served as a changing room for sport activities on the PAC oval.

Demolition of the old ground floor sports changing facilites in the two-storey library building took place to make way for this dining room and canteen facility. The works took place below an existing library which remained in use for the project duration.

Partial demolition of the library glazed façade was necessary to install the new roof to a level that was higher than the original first floor which resulted in the sealing of the new roof up to the old glass face.

Construction Detail

– Facetted glass external windows and bi-fold doors overlooking the oval.

– Structure built with a hidden roof slab capable of being used to build upon in the future, should an extra level ever be required.

Challenges

– Dismantling and adapting the first floor glass façade window had the challenge of keeping the existing library operational whilst also providing a good degree of weatherproofing.

– The entire project took place around a fully functioning school and operational oval.

– The existing fire, hydraulic and electrical infrastructure required adapting and updating to service this new facility, which involved trenching through heavily occupied areas.

Outcomes

– The project was completed on time and with very minimal disruption to the client, students and parents.
