Background
The City of Marion and the Australian Government are redeveloping the oval into a modern sporting and community facility with a purpose-built 2-storey building.
Project Detail
– 2-storey function centre
– Upgraded cycling and cricket storage building
– Resurfaced velodrome
– Updated memorial gardens
– Extended carparks and landscape areas
– New cricket practice nets
Construction Detail
– Structural steel framing
– Extensive glazed viewing areas
– Perforated facades
– Reclaimed flooring
– Block work and off-form concrete walling
Challenges
– Velodrome design unable to be achieved due to bitumen plant restrictions,
so alternative concrete design was undertaken.
– Ground water during piling caused significant delays to the programme, but we were able to mitigate the delays by resequencing and altering the project staging.
– Structural steel design was incomplete, causing a lenghthy shop drawing process to address design shortfalls.
– Maintained public and club access to velodrome and carparks during construction.
– Client design phase value management process left significant holes in the scope and detailing on the project.
– Maintained and protected the adjacent bowls greens during construction.
Outcome
– Successful delivery of a high-quality build within budget.
– Good relationship with client and stakeholders.
