Background

After successfully completing construction of two projects at Cabra Dominican College, including the music suite in 2018, Kennett Pty Ltd has been awarded the managing contractor role for construction of the gymnasium. This project includes the same Site Manager and Architect as the music suite project. The successful project team combination was chosen due to our solid industry relationships.

Project

The $7m project includes 2 new indoor basketball courts, 2 unisex changerooms, toilets and showering facilites, an umpires changeroom, canteen/kitchen, staff offices, multi-purpose classrooms, a gym space, new external paved thoroughfares and walkways with raised garden beds and seating.

Construction Detail

Demolition of existing gymnasium including connections to art and tech studies building, underground services and external basketball courts.

– 12m high gym consisting of structural steel, precast panels with pattern moulding, in-situ concrete, metal wall and roof cladding, hardware timber flooring and internal feature plywood wall cladding.

Challenges

Managing the programme, staged tendering and design changes.

Discovery of an undocumented layer of bitumen undernearth existing/demolished building footprint.

Working within an operating school creates challenges to minimise disruption to staff, students and parents, especially the drop-off/pick-up zones adcacent the site.
