Background
The Animal Welfare League of SA (AWL) purpose-built, state-of-the-art Cheesman Architect designed crematorium based at Edinburgh North hosts a series of single chamber cremation units for animals of all sizes, to allow the cremains of each individual animal, including equine, to be returned to its family. The profits generated by the facility contribute to the ongoing care and welfare of animals at the AWL’s Wingfield and Edinburgh North shelter facilities.
Construction Detail
– Substructure consists of strip footings and slab on ground.
– Structural steel frame with colour bond and CFC wall cladding.
– Building comprises 2 main cremation areas, each equipped with state-of-theart multi-chamber units including a general large capacity equine unit.
– Two cold rooms, storage sheds, processing area and administration offices with amenities.
Challenges
– The new building was situated at the rear of an existing AWL shelter. As this required shared access to the construction site, constant liaison and communication with the facility was an utmost importance as not to hamper their operational needs.
– The co-ordination, installation and Australian compliance of the cremation units which were custom built for AWL and shipped from the UK.
Outcomes
– Delivery of a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly animal cremation facility.
– Client satisfaction and relation leading to ongoing design input associated with a future master plan of the existing AWL Wingfield shelter.
