Background

Situated on the old Fidler & Webb building site, ALDI made a commitment to build a new store locally in the South East region of Mount Gambier. After several years, works began on the site, which included demolition of the existing Fidler & Webb building and levelling of the block before building works could commence.

Project Detail/s

The project entails a new ALDI store along with 4 speciality retail stores along Commercial Street, to compliment the new store. Construction of a new carpark and refreshed streetscape will also compliment the development area.

Construction Detail/s

Details of the building works completed included demolition, civil and earthworks, structural concrete, precast concrete, structural steel, services, askin roof, aluminium, refrigeration and loading dock and packing bin.

Challenges

Challenges faced included the following:

– Very tight 22-week programme for ALDI which Kennett achieved with works completed in time for the Christmas rush

– Underpinning issues with the heritage-listed neighbouring building

– Ground works being completed in the middle of winter

– Co-ordination of works – both the ALDI and Retail 1 specialty stores simultaneously

– Design issues encountered for Retail 1 parapets

Outcomes

– Kennett set a new benchmark in achieving the fastest-built ALDI of its type in South Australia and included a major EOT associated with the heritage-listed neighbouring property and the under-pinning issue.

– Minimal defects

– Good quality build and compliments from ALDI on the finish

– Retail 1 completed in due course to a high standard, after working closely with the architect to remedy a major design issue for the parapets, with the outcome being extremely well-resolved.
